fishing for MEN

A FOLLOWER of Christ is a fisher of men!
"Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men"
(Matt. 4:19). If you are not fishing, you are not
following. Jesus promised to make you a fisher
of men. "Preachers are no longer fishers of men,
but keepers of aquariums!"

STUDIES ON SOUL WINNING

This 60-page booklet which included several tracts, published by the New Life Tract Society, is a valuable source of information for anyone seeking "to save that which was lost." I have included three of the tracts, below...which I feel deserve special attention.

CLEAN VESSELS

II Timothy 2:19-22

GOD IS NOT going to take the pure water of life to thirsty souls in a dirty pitcher. "If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work" (II Tim. 2:21). God is still in business "adding to the church daily." Thirsty souls can be found everywhere waiting for "the water of life." Many are seeing "rivers of living water" (John 7:37-39) flow through them with souls being won daily. God’s provision allows any man to be "meet for the master’s use," but His very nature will not allow Him to use a dirty vessel.
"There are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour." (v. 20). Some Christians are used of God, some are not. A few win souls, most do not. This is an obvious fact in any church. Whose fault is it? Are some just not gifted enough, not ordained to be used? No, a thousand times no. "If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be...prepared unto every good work" (v. 21), and this surely includes winning souls, for all have been ordained to bring forth fruit (John 15:16).
This purging (separation) is to be from people and practices. Many believe "these" refers to the vessels "of wood and of earth...to dishonour." "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord" (II Cor. 6:17). God uses separated Christians, not isolated or withdrawn, but those in the world though not a part of it.
"Flee also youthful lusts" (v.22) is Paul’s plea. Youthful desires for pleasure and the present keep Christians from being available to God. Soul winners must be weaned from a life of fun to the serious business of eternity.
"Your iniquities have separated between you and your God" (Isa. 59:2). "Your sins have withholden good things from you" (Jer. 5:25) Remember Samson "wist not (knew not) that the Lord was departed from him" (Judg. 16:20). Could this be the reason you are not a vessel unto honour? Will you purge yourself to be "meet for the master’s use"? Deliverance from sin is free, but deliverance from the world demands the cost of separation.

GIVE THE GOSPEL

Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 15:1-3

GOOD NEWS--this is the "power of God unto salvation" (Rom. 1:16)! Good news--this is the story about Jesus. Good news--this is what men are to preach. Good news is what people need to hear and will listen to when preached. Good news is what Christians are to rejoice in and to share with the world. Oh, that all Christians entered into the joy of their salvation and the wonderful joy of passing on this good news to others.
To be specific, what is the "gospel," this good news about Christ? Simply put in I Corinthians 15:3, 4, it is "how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures." The good news one needs to hear is that someone loved him and has already paid the penalty of his sins. The essential essence of the gospel is that "Christ also hath once suffered for sins" (I Pet. 3:18), "Christ died for us" (Rom. 5:8), "Christ died for our sins" (I Cor.15:3). Paul said that "the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God" (I Cor. 1:18). The cross, the suffering, the shedding of Christ's blood, the death as pictured by all the animal sacrifices must be presented for people to hear the good news. The proof, the seal, the glory of this whole story is "that he rose again" (I Cor. 15:4). Discover how the apostles emphasized this (Acts 2:24, 32; 3:15; 4:10).
If you wanted to convince a Christian of the need of separation you would not just tack on a verse about separation to a message on some other subject and expect people to respond. But this is about all the gospel that is included in many sermons and tracts or in much personal witness. Notice carefully, it is almost mentioned, but alas, it is omitted or just tacked on in a sentence or a verse. No wonder so few come to Christ.
Not only does the gospel need to be given but given joyfully. How long has it been since you saw someone become excited and preach joyfully this good news. This is good news, tremendous news. Oh, to break through the barrier of reticence and cheerfully tell the good news wherever we go.

OBEDIENCE

Matthew 21:28-31; Haggai 1:12-14

THERE is no great mystery why so many never win souls to Christ. They never try. This is absolutely inexcusable.
In our text a father said to his son. "go work today in my vineyard" (Matt. 21:28). Now this is not an unreasonable request. The answer was unbelievable, for the son said, "I will not" (v. 29). This son however "repented and went." For some reason he changed his attitude and obeyed his father.
The second son said, "I go sir," but alas, he "went not" (v. 30). He had good intentions but he did not go. "Whither of them twain did the will of the father?" The answer of course came, "The first" (v.31). The second could have loved, admired and praised his father for many things, but he was disobedient. The first, and he alone, did the father’s will.
Christians ought to witness because they have been told to. Not to do so is pure disobedience. No matter what else one does, it does not substitute for doing the will of God as commanded.
Imagine the president of a company, while on a trip, writing a letter to the home office giving a list of things he wants done while he is away. When he returns several tell him what a wonderful letter he wrote. They were thrilled at the grammar, the play on words, and the logic. He asks, "Did you all do all that I told you?" The reply comes, "Well, no, we have been studying the letter all this time and just never got to it yet."
Can this happen in churches and individual lives today? Without a doubt God wants our worship and adoration as expressed by thousands of offerings made through the ages. This, however, never takes the place of obedience to His command to witness. One could pray all day and study the Word by the hour, but if he never witnesses to those around him, he has not done the will of the father. "Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams" (1 Sam 15:22). When one begins to obey the voice of the Lord then God will stir up the spirit to do the will of God. (Hag. 1:12-14). Begin witnessing now and see your heart stirred up with new joy.

If you are a bit shy or feel that you would not be able to adequately answer all of someone's questions, Gospel tracts are a wonderful way to witness to others. Leave one at a telephone booth, on a shelf near a cereal box, or in the ladies' restroom when shopping. We place one in every envelope with our monthly bill payments. The possibilities are almost endless.
